C.O.I.M. S.p.a., a multinational company based in Offanengo (CR) which has been developing and producing specialty chemicals since 1962, a leader in the production of polyesters, polyols, polyurethanes, and special resins for the production of composite materials and coatings, will host for the first time the event “The Ingredients of Packaging. Is the Future Coating?” organized by Packaging Meeting Srl and promoted by the Italian Packaging Institute, a key network in the packaging sector. The event will take place on May 8, 2025, at Coim SPA’s headquarters in Offanengo, located at Via Ricengo 21/23, and will serve as an opportunity to explore the latest trends, innovations, and challenges in the packaging industry, as well as a chance to network, learn, and share knowledge.
Coim, always committed to the research and development of innovative solutions, has decided to host this event, positioning itself not only as a strategic partner in the packaging industry, but also as a meeting and discussion hub for all players along the supply chain. Throughout the day, industry experts and professionals will gather in various panels to discuss emerging technologies, regulations, and sustainable solutions shaping the future of packaging. Topics such as innovations in packaging materials, the importance of sustainability and the circular economy, new regulations affecting the sector—including EU Regulation 2025/40 on packaging waste—and examples of best practices from leading market companies will be addressed.
Is the future coating? The path toward monomaterial packaging and the underlying uncertainties
The EU Regulation 2025/40 on packaging waste, dated December 19, 2024, represents one of the most ambitious and structured regulations by the European Union regarding packaging management. Its enforcement has further highlighted the role of coatings within solutions of greatest interest for packaging finishing.
Thus, coatings play a crucial role among packaging components, aligned with the sustainability prescriptions indicated by law, with particular attention to recyclability. They primarily serve to create a functional barrier, along with other purposes such as enabling the welding of packaging materials during the filling process or simply fulfilling an aesthetic role. Using coatings allows for a strategy aimed at favoring monomaterial/monocomponent packaging, which is not an obligation but a possible, preferable, and recommended choice under EU Regulation 2025/40. However, this growing importance faces several uncertainties that must be addressed, such as compliance with MOCA standards, actual barrier performance, shelf-life of the contained product, and alignment with the objectives of the packaging waste regulation.
“Being chosen as the host for this event is a great honor and a recognition of our commitment to the packaging sector. We are excited to contribute to such a relevant discussion and to create a stimulating environment for innovation and collaboration. There are many critical points to shed light on, and the goal of this event is precisely to address doubts and uncertainties, providing an overall picture of the current situation” comments Luca Gianzini, Marketing and M&A Manager at COIM GROUP.
