COIM celebrates its first 60 years of activity

C.O.I.M. S.p.A, an Italian multinational company producing specialty chemicals since 1962 and operating worldwide with nineteen manufacturing and trading companies, celebrates 60 years since it was set up.

COIM was set up in 1962 as a result of cooperation between Mario Buzzella and Cesare Zocchi, two men sharing passion for chemistry and entrepreneurial initiative. They started up an activity whose mission was to satisfy the growing demand for chemical products from a rapidly expanding economy.

After a lightning-fast start, the company grew continuously, due also to the strategy adopted by the two entrepreneurs to enter unexplored sectors of the Italian chemistry industry market. Within a few years, COIM thus gained a 50% share of the Italian hydrogen peroxide market.

In a constant search for new products to win other market segments, the company also shifted its focus to territorial expansion, which, due to the Made in Italy boom of the eighties, led it to establish a more extensive sales network, which covered not only Europe, but also South America, the United States and Asia. The new challenge, at the end of the nineties, was the conquest of production markets outside Europe.

Sixty years from its foundation, the COIM Group has become an Italian multinational company that develops, manufactures and sells chemical products for the manufacturing industry all over the world, operating locally through 19 companies - including 10 production sites - in Italy, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Singapore, China, India, USA, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Austria and the Netherlands.

Every day, more than 1,200 specialized collaborators are committed to interpreting and satisfying the customers' expectations through three main product lines:

  1. Polyesters and polyols;
  2. PU Case: polyurethane coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers;
  3. Special polyesters and resins.

The integration of raw materials, a focus on polyurethane systems, a wide and diversified range – 18 product lines, from polyesters to PU systems – and a high production capacity enable COIM to satisfy the technical, commercial and logistical needs of customers based in over 90 countries, for a turnover of 1 billion euros.

COIM: growth and sustainability

COIM is currently the sixth largest Italian Chemistry group and the first in Italy in the chemical product sector - in the segments of polyesters, polyols, polyurethanes and special resins - and one of the first in the world in the sector of polyesters for polyurethane systems. The strategies for ensuring further growth for COIM over the years include:

A main objective of the COIM Group is a continuous and sustainable development, in accordance with the values that have always characterized its activity: care and respect for people and the environment.

From this perspective, COIM is a leader of market innovations increasingly geared towards the sustainability of its solutions. The past few years have been characterized by the launch of numerous even more ecofriendly solutions: from the Isoexter-E polyols derived from renewable sources for the production of insulating materials to the Greenexter range of polymers containing raw materials based on renewable sources for the production of paints and composite materials; from the new Laripur RS and Urexter RS ranges of biobased polyurethane products for the shoe industry to the new, Novacote NE 810 S + CE 510 solvent-based compostable adhesive for food packaging; from the COIM FILCO fibre reinforcing solutions, which will become enriched with new proposals based on raw materials of biological origin, to the new coatings in the Novacote range for flexible single-material and sustainable packaging.
