COIM at Plast 2023 under the banner of sustainability

C.O.I.M. S.p.A, an Italian multinational that has manufactured chemical products since 1962 and that operates all over the world through nineteen manufacturing and trading companies, will be present at Plast 2023 with a wide range of innovations inspired by maximum efficiency and sustainability.

“COIM’s approach to sustainability is both integrated – environment, economy and society – and, on the product development front, open. In fact, it takes account of the various opportunities with which sustainable policies may develop: raw materials from biological sources, recyclable raw materials, biodegradable and compostable systems, and Low VOC systems, control and abatement of CO2 emissions along the entire supply line and recovery downstream of finished products for PU recycling. The innovations that we propose are of the “drop in” type, sustainable also from the operational point of view: they can be used by our customers without modifying their production processes or purchasing new machines. Our customers can also obtain integrated and personalized solutions from COIM, thus reaching maximum efficiency in supply, use and performance. Plast 2023 will be an important opportunity to present the results of our commitment to innovation and sustainability to the entire sector” explains Giuseppe Librandi, President and CEO of COIM.

Sustainable solutions for flexible packaging: Novacote and Coiminks at Plast 2023

With its Coiminks and Novacote ranges, COIM offers flexible packaging manufacturers a “3 in 1” solution: the proposal of adhesives, coatings and inks by a single supplier represents a peculiar feature that makes COIM one of the most complete players on the world scene in this sector.

Environmental sustainability, a top priority for COIM, is realized in this sector according to four main directives:

1) Development of monomaterial plastic solutions: in collaboration with CEFLEX, for example, COIM has taken part in a project for the production of monomaterial packages that use recycled PP and, in collaboration with RECYCLASS, is certifying adhesives that can be recycled mechanically.

2) Compostable solution offer: COIM presents the new Solvent-based adhesive NOVACOTE® NE 810 S + CE 510, tested in accordance with the EN 13432 standard and OK Compost Industrial certified, in accordance with the TÜV Austria, Seedling and BPI standards. The CoLam FX series of inks of COIMINKS has recently obtained and renewed its TÜV Austria OK Compost Industrial certificate that enables converters who use substrates and components certified as compostable, with ink within the maximum limit of application indicated on its certificate, to produce compostable packaging materials.

3) Regulatory compliance of products: COIM has developed a new portfolio of solventless and solvent-based solutions for the production of food and pharma packaging, offering the best characteristics in terms of sustainability, technical and application performance, safety and compliance with food contact regulations.

Our Solventless solutions include the new Hardener CA 400, which offers a modular combination to meet various application needs:
NOVACOTE® SF 787 A – CA 400.High performance
NOVACOTE® SF 716 A – CA 400.Medium performance
NOVACOTE® SF 707 A – CA 400.Standard performance

For our solvent-based products, through integration with our polyester products, including those with a high molecular weight, we have successfully placed on the market a wide range of hydroxy terminated products, GLYMO FREE and H351 FREE.

NOVACOTE® NC 560 A – CA 101.High performance, Full Aliphatic
NOVACOTE® NC 560 A – CA 28.High performance.
NOVACOTE® NC 882 A – CA 142.High performance. Aliphatic/Aromatic hybrid compliant with the FDA protocols for retort applications.
NOVACOTE® NC 488 A – CA 27.Low drying temperature. Used for monomaterial structures only.

4) Non-plastic monomaterial: monomaterial packaging presents the major advantage of being easier to recycle.

For paper packaging, COIM offers a vast range of products with primer properties, OPV, heat seal coating and barrier to moisture and grease, thus allowing combinations of solutions and applications with growing performance in terms of optics, sealability and barrier.

NOVACOTE® HS 8063. Water-based, hydrophobic and oleophobic heat seal lacquer, with a high vapour barrier.  Sealing temperature from 80 to 240°
NOVACOTE® HS 8414. Solvent-based and hydrophobic heat seal lacquer, with a medium vapour barrier. Sealing temperature from 100 to 240°
NOVACOTE® HS 844. Water-based heat seal lacquer. Sealing temperature from 90 to 260°.
NOVACOTE® VA 8064/CA 916. Matt overprint varnish with high heat resistance.

For Alu Foil packaging, through the integration of high-molecular-weight PES in production, we proposes an innovative series of PVC / STYRENE-FREE heat seal coatings, thus making a major step forward in terms of safety and regulatory food contact compliance.

NOVACOTE® HS 8436. Universal solvent-based, PVC and STYRENE. FREE heat seal lacquer.  Sealing temperature from 160 to 300°C
NOVACOTE® HS 8443.  Solvent-based, PVC and STYRENE FREE heat seal lacquer, with a low softening point. Sealing temperature from 70°C upwards.
NOVACOTE® VA 8015/CA 8341. Gloss overprint varnish, with a high heat resistance.

COIM a leading player in the transition from fossil to renewable sources in the shoe material sector: the news Urexter and Laripur solutions

At Plast 2023 COIM presents Urexter RS and Laripur RS: used to produce soles for fashion shoes also in the sectors of luxury, casual, sports and safety shoes, they are the fruit of accurate development towards maximum sustainability due to their formulation with a percentage of raw materials from renewable sources of over 70%.

For the shoe sector, the substitution of materials from fossil sources with materials from renewable sources represents a real breakthrough towards environmentally friendly solutions on a large scale: the biobased materials developed by COIM using renewable vegetable sources ensure a better CO2 footprint, without altering the durability of the products and allowing the manufacturers to avoid making changes to their machinery and consolidated production techniques.

Plaxter E–LB by COIM at Plast 2023: a new series of polymeric plasticizers with a content of raw materials from renewable sources of up to 50%

COIM has been operating on the market of polymeric plasticizers for PVC-based compounds for decades. The evolution of the range towards sustainable solutions began several years ago with the Plaxter P-L products, which offer innovative solutions using in part raw materials from renewable sources. The products in the Plaxter P-L series are present on the market with large volumes in all the applications that involve plasticized PVC products, such as transparent stretch film for food, faux leathers for the fashion and waterproof fabric sectors, the coating of special electrical cables, technical liquid or gas conveying pipes, special seals for food packaging and specific applications.

With the new Plaxter E-LB series of products, COIM meets the growing market need for more sustainable plasticizers and offers products with a content of raw materials from renewable sources of up to 50%, responding at the same time to the higher technical market needs. The Plaxter E-LB products can be industrialized through “drop in” substitutions in which the fossil source materials are replaced without making any changes to the process.

The solutions in the new Plaxter E-LB series have been compared to the standard products also from the point of view of their potential CO2 emissions, by conducting a comparative life cycle analysis (LCA) so as to be able to provide the user also with a documental estimate of emission reductions.

COIM is waiting for you at Plast 2023, Fiera Milano, 5-8 September 2023, pavilion 9 stand C12.
